090714_wheretostayBeing able to conveniently get around while on vacation is key for a fun and relaxing vacation for me and my wife. However, we also want to stay in the most beautiful areas of the destination, which can sometimes be off the beaten track. You need to do a lot of research or ask your travel agent to get the best of both worlds. I’ll give you some tips on where to stay in some of the most popular destinations.

While in Puerto Vallarta, we prefer to be in the Mismaloya area, which is tucked right into the deep green Sierra Madre Mountains offset by the blue shimmering waters of the Pacific. Depending on where you stay, Mismaloya is only a 10 minute cab ride to downtown, and it is the perfect combination of convenience and beauty.

In Cancun, we like to be right in the heart of it in Punta Cancun. At “the point”, you have less traffic, great views of the entire coastline, and can walk to the hottest bars, restaurants and shopping outlets. It’s ideal.

In Riviera Maya, you really need to decide how much you want to be off property. If you want to be out and about most nights of your stay, then stay right in Playa del Carmen. If you want to enjoy the resort and just get off property for a day or two, stay at one of the great all-inclusives along the Riviera Maya and take a shuttle or taxi to Playa del Carmen as needed.

As for Punta Cana, you want to be right in the heart of downtown Bavaro. Along this stretch of beach, you cannot go wrong. Not everyone realizes how many great beachfront restaurants there are in Bavaro. My wife and I always spend at least one night dining with our toes in the sand, cold drink in hand while eating a fantastic meal on the beach with equally impressive views and warm breezes. For us, that’s true relaxation.
