Hello my fellow travelers! I want to share my tips and tricks for staying healthy on vacation. What makes me a qualified to do this? I am a Sales Manager for Apple Vacations; I cover several states and am on the road all the time. My real “claim to fame” is that in my prior professional life I was a flight attendant for nearly 10 years. I have traveled to 35 different countries. When I first starting flying, I was a size 16. A few years and a few countries later, I was a size 24 – and heading for a 26! That was the largest uniform size they had and I thought “OK, time to make a change”. A year and a half later, thanks to healthy eating and exercise, I was wearing a size 8.
Staying healthy while traveling can be done. I know it’s tempting to go to a fantastic all-inclusive resort and indulge in all the great food they offer, but do it in moderation. Just because it is “all you can eat”, don’t eat all you can! Portion control is key. Did you know that an actual serving size of chicken is about the size of the palm of your hand (4.5 ounces)? A serving size of cheese is about the size of your thumb? When you’re at the buffet, don’t forget to fill up on fruits and veggies. Those are low calorie foods that will make you feel full. Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels!
Another key tip for a healthy vacation: Move your body. Get in some type of physical activity. Most resorts have beautiful fitness centers, and they’re usually empty. I am not saying to kill yourself in the gym for 2 hours, just do a quick 30 – minute walk on the treadmill and add maybe 15 minutes on the bike. If you prefer the outdoors, take advantage of the beach: go for a swim, snorkel or a walk down. Join the water aerobic class at the pool. Get that metabolism pumping so you can burn off that cookie you snuck in at the buffet!
These are my tips – what are your “traveling healthy” ideas? Send me your tips, suggestions and questions!
