To help Golden Apple agents stay connected at the Apple Vacations Tradeshow in Chicago, they were invited to a very informative presentation Mr. Rodolfo Lopez Negrete, Deputy Director General of the Mexico Tourism Board. I wish agents everywhere had the opportunity to hear his dynamic presentation. He gave us the facts and figures to help set the record straight about traveling to Mexico. Mr. Lopez Negrete explained why the perception about travel to Mexico is not the reality:
- Mexico is the #1 destination for American travelers.
- 97% of American travelers to Mexico find they are very satisfied or better.
- 99% of American travelers would recommend a vacation to Mexico to their family and friends.
- The number of worldwide international travelers through July is up by 3.5%
The top markets are experiencing growth from 6.6% to 57% with the exception of the US which is down 6.3%. Research finds Americans are traveling closer to home not only because of fear but more importantly due to the economy. Cruise lines that have temporarily suspended visits to Mexico did so because of economic reasons not because of safety issues.
Mexico is positioning itself in the Adventure Travel market as a diverse and world class destination for adventure travelers. In October the Adventure Travel World Summit takes place in Chiapas. Diving, kayaking, swimming with whale sharks, zip lining and rappelling are just some of the adventure experiences travelers can find in Mexico.
Americans love to follow celebrities and Mexico is a very popular destination among celebrities. Many celebs work and vacation in Mexico regularly. Lady Gaga, Nick Jonas and Delta Goodrem, Brett Favre, Mischa Barton and Brad Pitt have all visited Mexico this summer. Rachael Ray is filming 3 shows in Oaxaca, Puebla and San Miguel Allende. Mexican cuisine is one of only 3 in the world considered by UNESCO to be an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Peter Greenberg, renowned travel writer and Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon are featured in the PBS special Mexico: The Royal Tour. They will visit 10 states, from coast to coast, showing the beauty, historical sites and adventures in Mexico. Some of the adventures will include visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites, whale watching, rappelling, hot air ballooning and diving. Greenburg said, “…this wasn’t just one of the best experiences of my life, but that everything I experienced is open to all of you as well.” Mexico: The Royal Tour” is being broadcast on PBS stations.

To help us in selling Mexico the Tourism Board is investing $25 million in advertising. The ads will build credibility by telling REAL stories from REAL people. One campaign will feature testimonials in an entertaining Taxi Cab Confessions type style. Another campaign, Mexico: The Place You Thought You Knew will share the fun and exciting things to do in Mexico. These campaigns are designed to create a new era of growth and prosperity, to change the trend and misperception.
Deputy Director Lopez insists despite the perception, the reality IS Mexico’s tourist areas are safe. He encourages us as Mexico’s #1 travel partners to continue to promote Mexico as a vacation destination for relaxation, adventure and cultural experiences.
