Why you should go to Mexico

Now’s not the time to visit our neighbor to the south, right? Well, wrong. Mexico is still an amazing tourist destination that we have come to love. I’m currently in Cancun and wanted to take the time to let Apple Vacationers know what I’ve been experiencing firsthand. I’ve noticed thousands of happy travelers from around the world, most of whom are Americans. They are enjoying the sun, sand and warm Mexican hospitality. The vacations are meeting and exceeding expectations, exactly what you dream of when booking your vacation.

I am experiencing nothing like what the American press is reporting at all. When I’ve been talking to travelers, there seems to be the consensus that the negative press on Mexico is ridiculous! They’ve managed to lump all of Mexico – a country that’s the size of Western Europe – together! I personally don’t think that’s indicative of what’s happening in the entire country. Americans who travel to Mexico primarily go to six places, none of which have had travel alerts. These destinations are Cancun, Riviera Maya, Cozumel, Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit and Los Cabos. As a travel expert, I can tell you that it’s as easy-going as it’s always in these tourist destinations. And, it’s no surprise to me that Mexico remains one of the top tourist destinations in the world! It’s home to archaeological wonders, turquoise seas, a magnificent underwater world, and world-class hotels and vacation amenities.

Most travel to Mexico, ultimately, is simply good travel. It’s fun, affordable, eye-opening and fascinating. But, no, you don’t have to visit Mexico. Just know that the Mexico vacation experience on the ground almost never matches the sensationalized Mexico we see and read about.

Stay Connected to Mexico

To help Golden Apple agents stay connected at the Apple Vacations Tradeshow in Chicago, they were invited to a very informative presentation Mr. Rodolfo Lopez Negrete, Deputy Director General of the Mexico Tourism Board. I wish agents everywhere had the opportunity to hear his dynamic presentation. He gave us the facts and figures to help set the record straight about traveling to Mexico. Mr. Lopez Negrete explained why the perception about travel to Mexico is not the reality:

  • Mexico is the #1 destination for American travelers.
  • 97% of American travelers to Mexico find they are very satisfied or better.
  • 99% of American travelers would recommend a vacation to Mexico to their family and friends.
  • The number of worldwide international travelers through July is up by 3.5%

The top markets are experiencing growth from 6.6% to 57% with the exception of the US which is down 6.3%.  Research finds Americans are traveling closer to home not only because of fear but more importantly due to the economy. Cruise lines that have temporarily suspended visits to Mexico did so because of economic reasons not because of safety issues.

Strolling the Malecón and ‘Old Town’, Puerto Vallarta

avatar

Malecón Bronze SculptureThe Malecón is a perfect place for a romantic stroll or to just people watch.  Evenings are my favorite time to go. For the adventurous, I recommend starting at the Center of town and walk south towards ‘Old Town’, also known as the ‘Romantic Zone’.

The first things you’ll notice are the incredible bronze sculptures set against the backdrop of the gorgeous Banderas Bay. These sculptures are true interactive art; guests are invited to touch, sit in, and in some cases, even climb on.

Further along the Malecón are local artisans, souvenir shops, street performers and the most incredible sand sculptures. Across the street are a variety of restaurants and nightclubs to appeal to almost every sensibility. And continuing south, you’ll end up in the heart of ‘Old Town’ on Olas Altas Street.  Cobble stone streets, outdoor cafes, abundant shops, and eclectic nightlife make this area a must-see in Puerto Vallarta.  Nothing can compare to sipping a tropical drink and watching the parade of people strolling by.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of visiting the Malecón and ‘Old Town’, I would highly recommend doing so on your next Apple Vacation to Puerto Vallarta.

Puerto Vallarta

Every year, I try to get three of my closest friends together and take a much-needed long weekend away, thanks to Apple Vacations. This year, we all agreed we wanted a warm vacation spot with plenty to do plus offered a good blend of beach and town. I immediately thought of Puerto Vallarta.

For a short 3-night stay, I knew I wanted to stay close to the Malecón, a one-mile long seawall promenade and boardwalk close to downtown. Buenaventura Grand Hotel & Spa was an excellent choice. It was small, comfortable, and had the friendliest staff. Since it was only about a 10-minute walk from the Malecón, we were able to explore anytime we wanted. The views of the deep blue water and the mountains were outstanding. The food was fantastic, especially the breakfast buffet. ” I can have an omelet prepared just the way I want– with bacon, fruit and empanadas on the side …and unlimited mimosas? Yes, please!”

Our first night was the perfect opportunity to walk around and partake in one of my favorite activities, people watching. I know that Puerto Vallarta has a vibrant nightlife, but I was not expecting the streets to be as busy as they were, even for a Saturday night. It was unbelievable to see. Locals and tourists alike were out enjoying the beautiful evening with music pouring out from the clubs and filling the streets. Families were walking around with their ice cream cones and admiring the incredibly detailed sand sculptures. Twenty-somethings had their mugs filled with their favorite beverage and dancing to the music. The atmosphere was fantastic and I felt completely safe.

By far, the most charming feature about Puerto Vallarta is the old Mexican culture. You get that feeling as soon as you step onto the cobble stone streets and take-in the local architecture. We spent a day just walking around town and soaking up the atmosphere. Puerto Vallarta is the ultimate shopping vacation spot with interesting boutiques and art galleries. While I wasn’t in the market for a 4-ft. tall hand-carved marble giraffe, it sure fascinated me for a good 10 minutes. After all, how would I get it home?

There is nothing better than eating authentic Mexican food and fresh-caught seafood while on an Apple Vacation to Puerto Vallarta. Be sure to check out the restaurants downtown for a great selection. Did you know you can order Coronas by the bucket?  On our last night, we ate at a fantastic place with the best red snapper, Restaurant Rio.  Here we found a cozy atmosphere and the most amazing people; which I think sums up Puerto Vallarta as a whole.
