Advice from a Fitness Pro: Top Workouts in Mexico & the Caribbean

As owner of Fit Bodies Inc., which places fitness, yoga and sports professionals as guest instructors at luxury resort properties throughout Mexico & the Caribbean, fitness pro Suzelle Snowden has toured hundreds of resorts. We asked her for her favorite places for a good workout, and here’s what she had to say:

  1. The spin studio at Secrets the Vine Cancun has floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the pools and the sea. It’s the perfect view to fuel you through your workout.

  1. Dreams Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa has a great gym and indoor studio for spin and fitness classes, but the real standout here is the outdoor yoga classes held in the wedding gazebo.

  1. Negril’s Couples Swept Away has an amazing 10 acre sports & fitness complex that includes lit tennis courts, two squash courts, two racquetball courts, a fully equipped gym, 25-meter lap pool, aerobics, yoga, an outdoor jogging track, steam rooms, saunas, Jacuzzi and a basketball court. Fit Bodies Inc. sends two professional instructors there each week – one for yoga and one for fitness.

  1. Head out to the pier at Secrets Silversands Riveria Cancun for yoga classes. But you have to get there early – classes at this dreamy location fill up quickly!

  1. With a well-stocked gym, Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa would be a great choice for any fitness fanatic, but what makes this resort stand out is the early morning powerwalk through Cinnamon Hill Golf Course to the famous Rose Hall Great House at the top of the hill.

  1. While Secrets Papagayo Costa Rica has a beautiful spa and fitness center, the pro tip here is that every single member of the resort’s entertainment team is a professional dancer – guaranteed to get that heart rate pumping during poolside dance lessons or water aerobics!

  1. Secrets St. James Montego Bay and Secrets Wild Orchid Montego Bay share a fitness facility that overlooks manicured tropical gardens. Fit Bodies Inc. offers a yoga teacher and a fitness teacher there each week. SEMB_Aerial3_1

Since pre-Hispanic times the Temazcal, which consists in a steam room and purification rituals, have been part of the spiritual traditions for health and purification all over Mexico. Ancient cultures, including the Mayan culture, have always included the temazcal in their traditions and in some archaeological areas it’s still possible to see remains of ancient temazcals.

In former times, it was normal use that women recently after giving birth should undergo the temazcal post-purification in order to get “cleaned”.

Blue Diamond

Blue Diamond Riviera Maya offers a meditative and purifying temazcal ceremony in their distinctive oval torito, which represents the womb of Mother Earth.

The sauna of steam for the temazcal ritual is a kind of oval “oven” with enough space for several people. This steam oven symbolizes the womb of Mother Earth, and the spiritual part of the ritual works with the four elements: fire, water, earth and wind.

Traditionally, the shaman has been commissioned to do the “cleaning” of people through prayers, incense and touches with leaves and herbs, followed by the hot steam bath inside the temazcal. The result? A purification and detox of body, mind and soul.

The shaman at Zoetry Paraiso de la Bonita Rivieray Maya leads vacationers through the ancient temezcal ritual.

The ritual is today still practiced according to the ancestral customs and there are temazcal places both in Cancun and Riviera Maya that offer the ritual to anyone interested. Even several of the major resorts have their own temazcal as part of a spa.

After a cleansing with copal smoke, participants in the temazcal ceremony at Sandos Caracol Eco Resort end with a plunge in a natural jungle cenote.

You should consider this wonderful millennium experience to have a purification of body and mind on your next well-deserved vacation. It will definitively allow you to enjoy your vacation in a renewed way with much more energy and well-being!

An Apple Vacations’ All-Inclusive Experience – for the first time!

So you have never been to Mexico or The Caribbean?  There is no time like the present to start! Don’t know what to expect? Well our very own Content Specialist Lauren Roberts just went on her very first Apple Vacation and is sharing her experience with you.

A Travel Newbie’s First All-Inclusive Experience

As told by Apple Vacations’ Content Specialist  – Lauren Roberts

Let me preface this entire post by saying that I’ve never been out of the country. Growing up, my parents only traveled to the Jersey Shore and – on extremely rare occasions – Disney World. So, you can imagine my excitement when I found out I would be visiting Mexico for my very first time.

Crystal clear water, beautiful sandy beaches, and all-inclusive accommodations? I felt like I had booked a ticket to paradise! Most importantly, I would finally be able to see some of the properties that I worked with on a daily basis. And let me tell you, seeing a resort on the internet is very different than seeing it in person. I finally understand that now.

To be honest, before I started working at Apple Vacations, my knowledge of all-inclusive resorts was very slim. I never really traveled and therefore, never truly knew what was out there.

Well kids…

I was finally able to experience a true Apple Vacation, which was something I had really been looking forward to. The airport provided us with seamless check-in, and I have to admit that I was a little nervous about the entire process. Since I don’t travel often, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But getting onto my flight was a breeze. Non-stop flights are a major selling point, by the way.

Once we got off the plane and through customs, a transfer was ready to take us to our destination. Our driver was kind and provided us with cool beverages while we completed our site inspections, and our guide was extremely helpful with any questions we had. He continued with us throughout our entire stay, assisting us at each hotel we visited throughout the day.

Our host hotel, Secret Silversands Riviera Cancun, provided us with luxurious guestrooms, beautiful a la carte and buffet restaurants, and absolutely stunning grounds. Not to mention, the Unlimited-Luxury®. concept is just out of this world amazing. I had my choice of French, Italian, Mexican, and Japanese cuisine on a nightly basis. Let’s just say a few of us visited multiple restaurants a night. Drinks were available wherever you turned, and I was in complete bliss being able to order poolside as I sprawled out into a lounge chair. Special shout out goes to the resort’s room service option. I’m sorry I ordered half your menu. Totally not sorry I ate it all. It was delicious.

The Unlimited-Luxury®.experience truly provides guests with a worry-free vacation. Not having to pay after eating at a restaurant was a little strange at first (very dine and dash), but it was fantastic to know that you could essentially leave your wallet in your room. We did, however, wind up tipping for exceptional service, which we experienced a lot of.

The nightly entertainment and daily activities were free as well, so we were able to see a show or take advantage of non-motorized water sports whenever we pleased. I was even able to experience a poolside tequila tasting! Note to self: You will probably never like tequila no matter how hard you try. Points for persistence though.

Some group members chose to go kayaking in the ocean and had a great time. Others chose to experience a show or two at night, which always ended in rave reviews. Then there were the ones (cough, cough) who chose to end their night stuffing their face full of tempura fried ice cream. No shame!

So, in short, would I visit an all-inclusive resort through Apple Vacations again? Let’s see… Roundtrip airfare and transfers, hotel accommodations, unlimited food and beverages, and the assistance of an in-resort representative whenever you need it, among many other wonderful perks? You bet I would!

Would I eat snails again? Nope. Sorry, Bordeaux. Your lamb chop was excellent though!
