Kids Clubs

Kids Club — means kids! No grownups allowed.

Many of the hotels in Mexico & The Caribbean have kids clubs.  They all have their own age restrictions and rules but the one thing they have in common is that they are just for kids!

When I drop of my child I feel safe in doing so. I fill out his paperwork, they hand me a pager  (and page me if necessary) and they take care of him until I pick him up.  He is in a safe and secure environment.

Every time I have gone to resort, I am amazed at the adults who want to go into the kids clubs with their children and stay and the fuss they cause when they are told they can’t. I mean, you can look in or take a tour, but you can’t stay. For the safety of all the children, the clubs are just for kids!

Kids Getaway at The Explorers Club

090707_explorer21Traveling to Dreams Tulum, I had my first experience using a kids club at a resort. I had not planned to do it, and thought we’d continue with our family togetherness vacations that had worked well in the past.

When we arrived at Dreams Tulum, we had lunch at Seaside Grill and then headed for the pool. For a family resort, I wondered where all the kids were. I soon found out they were in camp. How horrible of these parents to come to this beautiful resort and stick their kids in camp! I would soon eat those words. Continue reading

Vacationing as a Single Parent

Palm TreeGoing on vacation with kids can be stressful and doing it as a single parent can be downright scary, but it doesn’t need to be. With a little bit of extra preparation, the single parent’s vacation with kids can be an awesome adventure!

Prior to leaving for the trip, the most important thing to do is to have a meeting with your kids.

Here are some tips:

- Discuss ground rules and review a map of the resort in advance, if possible.
- Pick a central point to use as home base in the event someone gets lost or separated. Sometimes the actual hotel room is not the best place, as your child would be apt to head there alone if they get lost or separated. Pick a specific restaurant, area by the pool or, better yet, the hotel’s front desk.
- Point out how to identify the resort employees by their uniforms.
- Set guidelines of your expectations in advance (are they allowed to go to the beach without you? The pool?).
- Think about bringing walkie -talkies along. This is a great way to keep in touch with kids who are old enough to cruise around on their own, yet without the roaming charges you are apt to get on your cell phone bill!

Reviewing the map before you go is also a good way to let your kids know about activities and areas geared toward kids. Continue reading
