Panama, When do I get to come back?

I completed my visit to Panama with only one question in mind – “When do I get to come back?”

View of Panama City from Trump Ocean Club Panama Hotel

Without a doubt, Panama is one of the most interesting countries I’ve ever visited.  It’s essentially three destinations – beach area (Playa Blanco and Playa Bonita), the Rain Forest and the metropolitan area of Panama City. Each destination, in and of itself, would make a wonderful vacation, but being able to visit all three areas makes a visit to Pamana something very special indeed.

Upon arrival in Pamana City, you’re struck by the city’s modernity and energy. High-rise hotels, high-rise apartment buildings, banks, casinos, restaurants, shops and businesses make up this bustling area with its very active commerce, arts, culture, nightlight and dining.  And, a visit to the old Colonial City (Casco Viejo) – founded in 1673 – should definitely be part of any Panama itinerary. At the center of Casco Viejo is Independence Plaza that has many restored and colorful buildings.

Casco Viejo

By the way, I wasn’t aware, until my visit, that the Panama Canal doesn’t run East to West; it runs North to South, with Pamana City anchoring the southern port that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Panama’s official currency is the US Dollar and English is widely spoken as a second language.  Service is “American-style” and the hotels’ and restaurants’ quality is top-notch.

The Miraflores Locks – just a half hour north of Panama City – has a wonderful Visitors Center boasting cool and very informative museum outlining the importance of the canal to Panama and the world. There’s a shaded viewing pavilion from which you can watch ships – large and small – pass through the locks.  Some of the larger ships go through with literally inches to spare on either side!  (A visit to the Miraflores canal museum is included in several of Apple Vacations’ optional day-tours and in our Explore Panama program.)

Some cool tidbits about the Panama Canal:

  •  Two million gallons of fresh water are used for every vessel that passes through the Canal locks.
  • A typical transit of the Canal by a cargo ship takes approximately 8 to 10 hours.
  • The highest toll was $419,420, paid by the cruise ship Norwegian Pearl in February 2011.
  • A multi-billion dollar project designed to widened and deepen the canal be will completed in 2014 and will allow ships double the size of today’s canal-capable vessels to go through it.

About an hour north of Panama City is the Soberania tropical rainforest that quite literally powers the Panama Canal with the billions of gallons of water it needs annually. The Rain Forest is simply incredible; it’s home to hundreds of types of birds, mammals and reptiles.  What struck me most was how dense and colorful the jungle is in this area, with its flowers the size of dinner plates and incredibly large trees.  From this area, you can hike, bike and take a boat tour of the Chagres River and see rare white-faced monkeys jumping around the trees above.

The beach areas of Playa Bonita and Playa Blanca are, respectively, about 40 minutes and 90 minutes drive from Panama City.  The drive to the beach areas is through very picturesque, rolling hills and small towns and shopping areas.   Playa Blanca is a particularly large beach that stretches along the Pacific Ocean; beach walkers will love the fact that they can walk for miles.  Guests looking for value and fun should look at the Decameron Resort, a family-friendly all-inclusive resort that stretches along the beach; during my visit to the Decameron, it was very clear that families were having a great time.

If you’re thinking about visiting Panama, check out our seven-night “Explore Pamana” tour that splits time in all three areas – Panama City, the Rainforest and Playa Blanca.

So, the answer to my original question “when do I get to go back?” – As soon as possible!

London Calling Visiting London Rock-N-Roll Style

When visiting London on an Apple Vacation, you of course should still visit great historical landmarks, including Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Parliament, the London Eye, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Tower Bridge.  The majesty and history is unparalleled.  But depending on what interests you the most, there are a world of unique tours and landmarks to add to your visit as well.

Everyone who knows me knows I LOVE music. I love, love, love a live concert, music and musical landmarks even on vacation. Every time I have been to London I have attended a concert or added musical highlights to my sightseeing.  There is so much rock history in London, it would be impossible to see everything, but here are some highlights I suggest.   You’ll truly stand in amazement when you are in a location where famous lyrics were written or written about, bands were formed, historical concerts were played and unfortunately where many famous musicians’ journeys came to an end.

If you are heading to London this summer, there is an amazing concert to kick of The Olympics that I would LOVE to be at! The show will be at London’s famous Hyde Park and will feature headline acts from all four nations of the UK, with Duran Duran representing England, Snow Patrol appearing for Northern Ireland, Stereophonics for Wales and Paolo Nutini will play for Scotland. The concert will be on July 27 to coincide with The Olympics opening ceremony.  On one of my trips to London (many moons ago),  I saw Duran Duran play the very first concert at the London Arena.  The energy of a band playing in front of their home country, was something I’ll never forget.

If you will not be in London in July then check out the schedule for the O2 Arena when planning your trip. O2 hosts many concerts and shows and in itself a musical landmark to visit.

One of the most famous musical highlights in Londonis the famous Abby Road Studios. Originally a Georgian townhouse built in the 1830s, Abby Road Studios is the most famous recording studio in the world.  It is most notably associated with the Beatles, who recorded many albums and singles there between 1962 and 1970. The Beatles 1969 album Abbey Road was named after the street where the studio is located, as the studio was only renamed Abby Road Studios in 1970.  The cover photo for that album is

recreated on a daily basis by fans from all over the world.  It is still an active recording studio, and as a matter of fact the official song for the Queens Diamond Jubilee was recorded in Studio One.

Rock and Roll sightseeing in London you can also find where Bob Geldof conceived Band Aid and Live Aid, where and how the Sex Pistols formed, the Clash’s neighborhood, the late homes of Bob Marley and Freddie Mercury and where Jimi Hendrix recorded. For Rolling Stones fans you can stop at the legendary Edith Grove apartment   - where it all began. You can also eat at Bill Wyman’s Sticky Fingers restaurant where you can see incredible original Stones nostalgia throughout the restaurant.  It took me longer to walk through the restaurant looking at all the memorabilia than it did to eat.

Simply the best … “New” Kid on the Block

Apple Vacations has been sending vacationers to Cancun for over 30 years. I am always amazed to see the changes each time I vacation there. Cancun, Mexico was the first Apple Vacation I ever went on, and I love it more each time I go back.

The last few years, I, like many Apple Vacationers, have not actually been staying “in” Cancun, rather we have been flying in to Cancun and heading south to Riviera Maya to experience Puerto Morelos, Tulum and Playa del Carmen.  There are so many fabulous resorts in this region, and each is unique. It is very family friendly and I loved it each time.

But, I am very excited for my next trip, because of all the new Resorts in Cancun.  “What’s old, is new again” and more LUXURIOUS than ever!  So many new resorts have opened or are about to open in Cancun. The landscape has completely changed and it is almost like it is a completely new destination. I am so excited to experience it once again.

So go ahead, take another Apple Vacation to Cancun. New resorts to discover are Sandos Cancun Luxury Resort, Iberostar Cancun and RIU Peninsula which are all currently open and Secrets The Vine Cancun, which is opening soon!  Check out the “unofficial shot” of construction from the ocean view room, and restaurant.

Stay tuned to the blog, as we will be featuring reviews on all of these amazing resorts soon.

Recommendation for RIU Palace Mexico

As a seasoned traveler, when I go abroad, I always try to keep an open mind. Recently, I took a week-long vacation with my husband to RIU Palace Mexico. I wasn’t expecting what RIU had in store for us.

First off, I completely fell in love with the charming, picturesque town of Playa del Carmen.  When we arrived at the resort, RIU Palace Mexico, I was pleasantly surprised with the upscale accommodations and friendly staff.  The décor of this hotel, both exterior and interior, is beautiful with Spanish type architecture/frescoes, which carries throughout the hotel and an immense lobby full of brilliant chandeliers.   The grounds are perfectly landscaped and their cascading waterfalls made a peaceful setting.  The junior-suite rooms were spacious with turn down service and flower petals in the bed/bathroom every night. Other top amenities include 24-hour all-inclusive and exchange privileges with the other RIU Resorts in Riviera Maya, which we took advantage of for breakfast and lunch.   They have a large court yard and every night there was entertainment with bands, singers and dancers, whom were awesome I might add. I truly felt like I was in a king’s palace because the scenery is breathtaking.   Everything was close and not a lot of walking to get from one area to another. The Theater across from the courtyard had different shows every night from Las Vegas type shows to Magic acts.   The staff was friendly, always cheerful, and there to accommodate you.  I loved their buffet restaurant for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.  They had such a display of foods from seafood dishes to roasts of all kinds (such as duck, which is one of my favorites and cooked to perfection).  The chefs can cook your steak/poultry to your liking, which is a nice touch.   Their gourmet restaurants, an Asian, Brazilian, Krystal Fusion, El Patio, were all very good. My favorite was El Patio, serving steaks and seafood specialties, and located on the beach.  The lobby bar with the pianist was exceptional – playing various types of classical music to rock n roll pieces.  Top shelf liquor served throughout, mini-bar stocked daily, and with liquor dispensers on the wall, no one should go thirsty.  2 Pools, 1 with a swim-up bar and daily activities, and the other pool for a less active, quiet setting.  And they have a pool bar too!

Aaah….then there’s the beach, and a very large beach with lots of palm trees, waiter service, barbeque/snack area, massage area and plenty of watersports available.  Shopping right across the street on Caribbean Street and Playa del Carmen’s famed 5th Ave just minutes away.  The hotel is not far from the Tulum ruins with their displays of temples facing the beautiful blue sea is a great ½ day excursion.  If you have time, visit Chichen Itza, one of the 7 wonders of the world,  is about 2 hours travel time from the hotel and absolutely a must see with so much Mayan history/culture. The famous pyramid, Temple of Kulkulkan, depicts a calendar which the Mayans incredibly designed and is spectacular.  All in all, there is much to do around the Riu Palace Mexico Resort. I definitely was pleased with this hotel and highly recommend it.  In my opinion, and having stayed at several hotels, maybe this hotel should have a higher rating?

Top 10 reasons to book with a Travel Agent

In all my years in the travel industry I can say that I have seen many changes. From the handwriting airline tickets, to booking by telephone and the hundred pound OAG book! With all the changes there is one thing I know that will never change, I will always love my job!

When I started, agents really didn’t have competition besides other agencies. With technology of today, the good agents have survived. Don’t be fooled by the television commercials that state “never a booking charge for our services!” and “we guarantee the lowest rate.” Fact is, agents don’t charge those fees for packages either, and nine times out of ten our prices are identical to theirs.

One thing that sets the traditional agent apart from these is our customer service and knowledge. Anyone can go on line and find a vacation package to Jamaica, but it takes a good agent to put their clients in a resort that they feel comfortable with and will enjoy. How do you find a good agent? In the time it takes you to research your own vacation, you can find a good agent. There are several of us on the Apple Vacations Facebook page. We are there to answer your questions, advise you of resorts and the best deals available. You could also visit your hometown agency. Remember, buying local supports your community!

Here are my Top 10 reasons for booking with a professional travel agent:

1.    We love our jobs
2.    Supporting our U.S. Economy (ever wonder where those 800s go to?)
3.    We will be on top of any schedule changes, delays or cancellations
4.    We provide payment options and terms
5.    We (the majority) are there 24/7 if you need us
6.    Agents have toured the destinations and resorts, so yes…we know more than you!
7.    Have a better chance of scoring you an upgrade
8.    Problems before/during/after the trip, we go to bat for you NOT THE COMPANY
9.    We will put you in the perfect resort for your expectations and budget
10.    We are travelers just like you

Do people ever really win an Apple Vacation?

Everyone wants to win a prize. But, do people ever really win an Apple Vacation? Yes they do! Here is a review from a happy prize winner from Facebook who just returned from Punta Cana.

We want to thank Apple Vacations so much from for such a wonderful trip to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

We really were amazed the way we were treated. We won the original 3 day fully inclusive trip but live in the Boston area. When we mentioned we would have to fly from Boston to pick up the departure the day before the trip, you upgraded us to a Boston departure, for a 7 day fully inclusive vacation!   Then when the original resort was overbooked, we got upgraded yet again to one of the best on the Island, Secrets Royal Beach. Our room was a beautiful Junior Suite with Jacuzzi and far exceeded our expectations.  The resort was fantastic, it had great food, a great location, and the staff was so friendly and helpful.

We found that the whole trip to be well run and supported by your Amstar representatives. They had all the relevant information for the resort and good advice for day trips that were available. My wife lost a bag on one of these trips and they both followed up with the outside tour operator, they found the bag and got it back to her intact.

The way we were treated was exceptional, and we would not hesitate to use or recommend Apple Vacations in the future. Our daughter who entered us in the contest said how much she had enjoyed using Apple Vacations for her vacation and how accommodating you were. We can certainly confirm that and want to thank you all again at Apple Vacations especially Susan for a wonderful (free) vacation experience.

Zoetry – Everyone should enjoy Endless Privileges

This year’s family vacation was to Zoetry Agua Punta Cana, a beautiful, luxurious, oceanfront property, with the most amazing amenities!

When we first arrived in Punta Cana, we had a driver waiting for us with a private nonstop transfer to take us to the resort. From the moment I stepped foot into Zoetry, I fell in love. We were immediately seated with warm towels and drinks while they checked us in. The exceptional service never stopped.

Zoetry Agua is located on an isolated stretch of beach that gives the resort an exclusive feel. Although we were advised the resort was full, it never felt crowded. Beach chairs were always available and there was never a wait for anything. Easily accessible on the beach, is a batch of coral reef that could be easily seen through the crystal clear water along with tropical fishes. Every night, we would receive the resorts newsletter “Sundial”, which listed all of the following day’s activities. Zoetry offered a wide variety of daily activities to choose from. As a family, we chose to go horseback riding on the beach and took a bike tour around the neighboring towns.

Being as I was in the Dominican Republic, I wanted to try some local dishes. Unfortunately none of the dishes we wanted to try were officially on the menu; however, the Chef was more than happy to cook us up some local cuisine. One of my favorite Dominican dishes is Mofongo. This dish is comprised of mashed up plantains with garlic and a side of fried cheese or a choice of meat with a side of broth for dipping. Another one of my favorite dishes is called La Bandera. La Bandera is spanish for “the flag” as in the Dominican flag. It is named the Dominican flag because it is the traditional meal for Dominicans; consisting of rice, beans, choice of stew meat, salad, and fried plantains The next day, a Zoetry staff member brought us local Dominican fruits like zapote, guanábana and guayaba to make fruit platters and shakes for us. Nonchalantly, I mentioned to a staff member how much my family and I enjoy coconut milk. From the time I made that remark, until the day I left the resort, the staff made sure to have fresh coconuts waiting for us as we arrived at the beach even though I never officially asked.

Due to the small size of the resort, guests are able to become familiar with the staff and vice versa. The staff catered to our every need, if we wanted something, they found a way to get it to us. They made sure you felt like Zoetry was your second home. It made leaving so much more difficult, because not only are you leaving stunning surroundings, it feels like you are also saying goodbye to good friends. On our last day, the restaurant manager surprised us with a special last lunch with all of our favorite dishes.

Zoetry Agua is hands down the best resort I have been to with Apple Vacations. A great resort, offering excellent food and drinks, great service, broad choice of activities, and a relaxing homey feeling, everything I think makes a great vacation. Zoetry Agua is my benchmark for measuring future resorts experiences and what an amazing trip should be.
